PrepScholar is the better choice for most families: it costs less at every level ($397 self-paced, $895 for live small-group classes), you get a 5-day free trial, and its 160-point guarantee applies whatever your teen’s starting score. Prep Expert makes sense for a teen who needs a fixed class schedule to stay on track and is starting at or below 1250, where its bigger 200-point guarantee applies, but you pay more per hour of live teaching for that structure.

How we compared them

We haven’t enrolled a student in either program. This comparison comes from PrepScholar’s pricing page and Prep Expert’s course pages, class schedule pages and Terms of Service, all read on 2026-10-14 and linked in the sources. We focused on what parents pay, how many hours of live teaching that buys, what the score guarantees actually require, and how long you have to get your money back.

Cost per hour of live teaching

Both programs advertise a per-hour figure, but they count different hours. Prep Expert’s schedule page lists the 6-Week Flagship as 72 course hours at about $17 an hour, and those 72 hours include exams and homework. The live part is 12 classes of 3 hours, or 36 hours with an instructor.

Price Live instructor hours Per live hour
PrepScholar live classes $895 Up to 36 About $24.86 (if your teen attends all 36)
Prep Expert 6-Week Flagship $1,196 36 About $33.22

PrepScholar’s $895 plan also includes its full self-paced program, AI assistant included, which it values at $495 on its own. Over a single test cycle, the Prep Expert class costs about $300 more for the same amount of live teaching time. Prep Expert does add free weekly office hours and records classes that your teen misses.

The guarantees: read the fine print before you count on one

PrepScholar lists its guarantee on every SAT plan. If your teen starts below 1370, the official SAT has to rise 160+ points. From 1370 or above, the target is 1530. To qualify, your teen must:

There’s one refund per household.

Prep Expert’s Terms of Service set the bar on effort as well as score. The 200-point SAT guarantee only covers students starting at or below a cutoff (1250 in its example), and to qualify your teen must:

Missed installment payments void the guarantee, and so does switching to another live course after it starts.

What this means for you: if your teen is already scoring above about 1250, Prep Expert’s headline 200-point promise doesn’t apply in full. And if your teen tends to skip homework, neither guarantee is likely to pay out. They reward finishing the whole program.

Refunds if it isn’t working

Prep Expert gives a full refund if you withdraw within 14 days of purchase, and nothing after that. The payer (usually a parent) has to make the request. PrepScholar’s trial lasts 5 days from the diagnostic test (and ends no later than 10 days after you enter card details). The charge is pending during the trial and is voided if you email to cancel. Its pricing page doesn’t describe refunds for the live-class or tutoring plans after that, so ask before you buy those.

1. Our pick

PrepScholar

Best for teens who want adaptive self-paced SAT prep with a score guarantee

Pricing: From $397 (self-paced, 12 months); live classes $895; 1-on-1 tutoring $995; 5-day free trial

What we like

  • 5-day free trial on each plan
  • 160-point SAT score-increase guarantee or full refund (conditions apply)
  • Self-paced program with 90+ skill lessons, 4,700+ practice questions and 8 official SATs

Watch out for

  • One-time cost starts at $397
  • Guarantee requires completing all assigned lessons and practice tests

Pick PrepScholar if your teen can work on their own a few times a week, your budget is under $1,000, or their schedule is unpredictable (sports, a job, a heavy AP load). Start with the 5-day trial on the $397 plan. If they won’t log in without a teacher waiting, move up to the $895 live classes, which include the self-paced program. If your student is in 9th or 10th grade, the two-year plan ($577) covers them through junior year.

2. Runner-up

Prep Expert

Best for high schoolers wanting live online SAT/ACT classes with a score guarantee

Pricing: 6-Week Flagship live SAT course $1,196 (or 4 × $299) on its current schedule pages; other course prices shown per schedule

What we like

  • Live online courses taught by top-1% scorers
  • 200-point SAT score-increase guarantee with 100% refund (on listed SAT courses)
  • Several formats: 6-, 7- and 8-week courses, Weekend Review, self-paced video

Watch out for

  • Prices are shown per class schedule, not on the course overview page
  • 200-point guarantee requires a starting score at or below 1250 plus 80% attendance and 90% homework
  • Full refund only within 14 days of purchase

Pick Prep Expert if your teen does best with a set class time and a teacher expecting them, is free for a 6-week block of weekend or weeknight classes, and is starting at or below 1250, so the full 200-point guarantee applies. Check the specific schedule page for the price, since Prep Expert shows prices per section, and use the 14-day refund window to decide.

Not for: teens already scoring in the high 1300s who need a few targeted points, or families who need a trial before paying.

Try the free option first

Before you pay for either, have your teen take a free, full-length practice test in the College Board’s Bluebook app, and use free Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy for a study plan. A real baseline score tells you which guarantee your teen would qualify for, and whether you need paid prep at all.

FAQ

Is Prep Expert worth the money?

It depends on your teen. You’re paying for structure: 12 scheduled 3-hour classes with homework and tests in between. If your teen won’t keep up with a self-paced course, that structure is worth it. If they will, PrepScholar’s self-paced plan costs about a third as much.

Does the PrepScholar 160-point guarantee really work?

The refund is real, but it’s conditional. Your teen has to complete all assigned lessons and practice tests, sit an official SAT within 60 days, and have the score report mailed to PrepScholar. Plan for those steps from day one.

Which is better for the digital SAT?

Both sell prep for the current digital SAT. PrepScholar’s plans include 8 official College Board practice tests. Bluebook also has free full-length official practice tests, which are worth taking whichever program you choose.

Can my teen switch Prep Expert class times?

Yes. Schedule changes are free before the course starts. Switching to a different live course after it starts voids the score guarantee.
