For most families, Wyzant is the best place to start with online math tutoring: you pick a specific tutor, pay by the lesson with no contract, and the first hour with a new tutor is free if it isn’t a good fit. If you already know your child needs steady 1:1 math help for a semester or more, Cuemath works out cheaper per hour, as long as you’re comfortable paying for 6 or 12 months up front.
If you’re not sure your child needs a tutor at all, try free Khan Academy for a couple of weeks first. That costs nothing and tells you where the gaps are.
We haven’t enrolled a child with any of these services. This guide is built from each provider’s own pricing, policy and help pages, read on 2026-10-14 and listed in the sources. We compared what parents actually weigh: who teaches, whether it’s 1:1 or a group, how much an hour of tutoring really costs once session length and fees are counted, how long you’re locked in, and what you get back if it doesn’t work out.
Most “best math tutoring” lists quote a headline price per class. That number isn’t comparable across services, because a Cuemath class is 40 minutes, a Wyzant lesson is priced per hour, and Outschool classes are priced per listing. So below we convert everything to cost per hour of live tutoring.

Watch out for
Why it’s our top pick: Wyzant is a marketplace, not a program. You read tutor profiles, message them for free, and book the person who fits your child, whether that means a patient explainer for a 4th grader who hates fractions or a calculus specialist for a junior. Wyzant says tutors average $35–$60 an hour, with no subscription and no upfront payment, and its Good Fit Guarantee means you don’t pay for the first hour with a new tutor if you’re not satisfied.
Who it’s not for: families who want someone else to plan the curriculum and handle scheduling. Quality and price depend on the tutor you choose, and some listed tutors charge well over $100 an hour.
Best for grades K–12 who want 1:1 online math tutoring with the same tutor
Pricing: From $15/class (12-month plan, KG–G5); 6-month plans from $17/class; platform fee per billing cycle

Watch out for
Why it’s here: Cuemath is a math-only program with a structured curriculum and the same 1:1 tutor every session. Classes are 40 minutes. Plans come in 6-month (52 classes) or 12-month (104 classes) blocks, which works out to about two classes a week. Per hour of tutoring, it’s the cheapest 1:1 option here if you commit.
Who it’s not for: anyone testing the waters. The 6-month plan bills $884 to $1,482 every 26 weeks plus a $90 platform fee. Refunds are pro-rata for unused classes, minus payment and processing charges, and you have to request one at least 15 days before 12 months from the invoice date (see the refund policy).

Pricing: Pay per class at the teacher's listed price, or an optional monthly membership (credits worth $0.50 each); plan prices not shown on the public membership page
What we like
Watch out for
Why it’s here: Outschool is the pick for math enrichment rather than catch-up: live group classes on a single topic or skill, taught by independent teachers. You can pay per class at the listed price, and membership is optional. Members get monthly credits (each worth $0.50 toward classes) that roll over while the membership is active, and you can pause for up to 12 weeks.
Who it’s not for: a child who is behind and needs someone to diagnose and fix specific gaps. A group class can’t adjust to one child the way a 1:1 tutor can. Prices vary class by class, so compare a few listings before you enroll.
Here’s the same amount of tutoring priced three ways: 34.7 hours, the total time in one Cuemath 6-month plan (52 classes × 40 minutes). Cuemath figures include the $90 platform fee on 6-month plans. The 12-month plans list a $0 platform fee.
| Option | Per hour of live 1:1 time | For 34.7 hours | Paid when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuemath, lowest price tier, 12-month plan | $22.50 | $781 (you pay $1,560 for 69 hours) | Up front, yearly |
| Cuemath, lowest price tier, 6-month plan | $28.10 | $974 | Up front, every 26 weeks |
| Cuemath, highest price tier, 6-month plan | $45.35 | $1,572 | Up front, every 26 weeks |
| Wyzant at $35/hr | $35 | $1,213 | Per lesson |
| Wyzant at $60/hr | $60 | $2,080 | Per lesson |
| Khan Academy | Free (no live tutor) | $0 | — |
Cuemath shows three price tiers ($15–$25.50 per class on 12-month plans) across its grade tabs, and the page doesn’t spell out which grades pay which. The SAT Prep Suite bundled with the top tier suggests older students pay more, so check your child’s grade on the pricing page before you compare.
The takeaway: Cuemath’s lowest tier is cheaper per hour than nearly any Wyzant tutor, but you pay for half a year or a full year at once. Wyzant costs more per hour, but you can stop after one lesson. For a child who might only need a month of help before a unit test, Wyzant almost always costs less overall.
On Wyzant, tutors set their own rates. Wyzant says the average is $35–$60 an hour, and some charge much more. Cuemath works out to roughly $22.50–$45 per hour of 1:1 time depending on the price tier and plan length, but it’s billed in 6- or 12-month blocks. Outschool group classes are priced per listing.
It depends more on the tutor and how often your child meets them than on the format. Online tutors here use shared whiteboards and video (Wyzant lists a whiteboard, audio/video and a code editor in its lesson tools). If your child struggles to focus on a screen, Wyzant’s in-person option is worth a look.
Cuemath’s plans are built around about two 40-minute classes a week. For catching up on a single unit, many families start with one session a week and adjust. Paying per lesson, as you do on Wyzant, makes it easy to change.
Khan Academy is a free nonprofit with 840+ courses covering K–12 math and more, and Khan Academy Kids is a free app for ages 2–8. It isn’t live tutoring, but it’s a strong first step.
